Meet the Therapist!
Well hello there, happy you are here! My name is Genia (pronounced Gina) Guerra and I’m an Associate Social Worker/Therapist. I have a strong interest in helping individuals who are striving to understand and grow within themselves while navigating life’s obstacles. I’ve worked in various settings ranging from university counseling centers, community mental health and crisis centers.

I have extensive experience working alongside various populations, ages, and cultural backgrounds. I have seen clients living with depression, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem concerns, life stressors and transitions, grief and loss, and family stressors. My most memorable moments of being a therapist have been supporting my clients in the LGBTQ+ community who decided to come out to their family for the first time.

As a Latina therapist, I strive to break the negative stereotypes of seeking mental health within different cultures. I make sure to empower my clients during their journey of prioritizing their needs and breaking generational traumas. Prioritizing your mental health can be challenging but most of all it’s empowering to work towards your best self for yourself.

How Can I Help You?
Therapy can be intimidating at first and it’s important as a therapist to recognize that, which is why my approach is very down-to-earth. I want you to feel a warm welcome; I take a client-centered approach, where we develop individualized and authentic goals. What you can expect from our sessions is having someone listen and walk with you through any life challenges, explore any unconscious patterns that may not be helping you towards your goals and navigating your relationship within yourself or with others.

My goal for you in therapy is to focus on your strengths, build a therapeutic relationship and highlight that you are the expert of your life. In therapy, there is not a one size fits all intervention, which is why it’s important as your therapist to help you identify your needs and goals. I use various evidence-based interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy among others. These interventions will help build a deeper understanding of yourself, help uncover tools and build skills to work towards your healing journey.

My Philosophy on Mental Health:
Mental health is just as important as your physical health, however, I do recognize that therapy includes a certain level of vulnerability which can sometimes be intimidating. The difference with therapy is the large aspect of self-discovery and self-growth, which happens when you choose yourself and work towards your goals. It’s very exciting to see how mental health has become a more open topic and seeing a therapist is no longer as taboo as it has been. I strongly believe this openness is a result of mental health being ignored for generations and now many have decided growth is more important than complacency. I also use humor to help you feel more comfortable in a therapeutic setting. Be proud of making the effort to put yourself out there and showing up for yourself.

More About Me…
I’m a native New Yorker from the NYC Borough of Queens and I’m Puerto Rican. I love trying different ethnic foods, exploring new places in San Diego, doing yoga, going bike riding and pilates. I recently married my college sweetheart and we live with our 5 year old Poodle Terrier. I have been living in San Diego for almost 6 years and I have learned so much about myself in that time.

Fun Fact:
I watch 90-Day Fiance every Sunday and I enjoy playing zombie games such as Resident Evil.
