Hello, my name is Dr. Laura Schairer and I am a clinical psychologist.
I have a strong interest in helping military service members/veterans and their family members. I have extensive experience with healing trauma, treating insomnia, depression and anxiety as well as helping people cope with medical illness (e.g. cancer, diabetes, renal failure, MS, chronic pain, fibromyalgia). I have lived experience as a close family member of an OIF/OEF Army veteran.
How Can I Help You?
I work primarily from a trauma lens to understand all of the ways that previous traumas have impacted your life now. I have specific training in Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Narrative Exposure therapy for trauma.
In addition to trauma, I have specialized training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, and sexual dysfunction.
My Philosophy on Mental Health:
My general approach is to work with you to find the type of therapy that works best for you. I may have gone through a lot of school and read a lot of books, but I know that YOU are the expert on you. Therapy only works if you can trust your therapist and feel like a part of a team, rather than having a doctor talking down to you. I make it my mission to check in with you and make sure you are feeling safe and comfortable so that together we can help you live your life according to your own values.
More About Me…
I was born and raised in Seattle but lived in NYC for 9 years as an adult prior to moving to San Diego. Because of that, I think I embody the warmth of the Northwest while being as straightforward as a New Yorker. My husband and I met in college and we have been together over 15 years. We have a 5 year old son and a 1.5 year old daughter. I love cats and if you see me via telehealth you may meet my sweet white shorthair Posy, who likes to make occasional appearances. When I’m not in the office, I enjoy going to the beach, playing volleyball, reading, playing board games, and doing escape rooms.
I have an odd ability to remember lyrics and can often sing along to a song even if I haven’t heard it in over 20 years.
