In our previous blogs we have discussed what constitutes PTSD and different approaches to treatment, now let’s discuss what happens if one does not seek treatment. There is evidence to suggest that once somebody meets criteria for PTSD it is unlikely for this diagnosis to go away without outside intervention. This is not to say that some individuals are not able to utilize tools on their own to decrease their symptoms, as that can happen. However, this does suggest that folks need some source of outside support, such as therapy or counseling to help get them unstuck and moving forward in order to decrease their symptoms. No matter how long you have been experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder there is still hope that things will get better with treatment. We have provided counseling to folks who served in the Vietnam War and have benefited from PTSD treatment. We have worked with folks with childhood abuse issues who are now 60 years old and benefiting from treatment. So, whether you are newly experiencing these symptoms of trauma or have been dealing with them for years, you can still benefit from treatment. The issue becomes those who never seek treatment and continue to think they will “snap out of it.” All too often these people begin to isolate, become depressed, and potentially turn to alcohol or other unhealthy behaviors as a means of avoiding the impact of PTSD, but these things only make it worse. Confronting these demons has been show to be most effective in moving past the trauma and bettering oneself. It’s okay to admit that you don’t know how to move past this. How can you expect that your mind and body would know how to move past a very horrific and traumatizing event?
