Meet the Therapist!

Hello, my name is Alex Mers and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Prior to joining the Freedom Within team, I supported families in Colorado for over a decade in processing and healing trauma and grief after the death loss of a loved one.
I have a strong passion for helping people who are going through any type of loss/transition/change due to my lived experience with birth trauma, postpartum issues, and death loss. I strongly believe in the importance of ongoing allyship for BIPOC and LGBTQIA folks and continuing to ensure I am providing a safe, healing space for those who have and are facing oppression. I find therapy is best when trust is built, authenticity is allowed, and humor is welcomed.
How Can I Help You?

My degree is in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology meaning I take a holistic approach in my work with clients and can create space for spirituality and existential processing if desired. With my extensive experience in grief and loss, I can support you in processing and coping with trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, parenting struggles, changes in identity, and anything else that is making you feel “not like yourself.” I follow a person-centered model, meeting you where you are at, with gentle direction toward deeper exploration.

In addition to bringing my whole self to our work, my primary evidence-based treatment approaches are Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I have found EMDR can assist clients in getting to the roots of present day issues quickly, while CBT allows for pulling apart of sticky core beliefs. I am also trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Gestalt Therapy, mindfulness, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy Level 1. Each approach is like a tool in my toolbox, that we can pull out depending on which unique issues we need to address for you!

My Philosophy on Mental Health:
I’ve found therapy is often needed when painful or traumatic experiences did not have adequate space, time, or necessary support to be processed in a healthy way. When this happens, the experiences are stored unprocessed or fragmented, which means they continue to activate/trigger/haunt us in the present day. Therapy provides the space for pain and trauma to be seen, heard, and felt so that it can be stored in a healthy form. I am grateful you took this vulnerable step toward repairing and healing. I look forward to walking alongside you on your return to your authentic self!

More About Me…
I grew up in a small town in the Midwest and as soon as I entered adulthood, I bounced all over the U.S., changed majors several times in college, and had the privilege of volunteering in Thailand before graduate school. I am a mom of two kids and a Boxer mix rescue dog. In my home, we love music, cooking, laughter, crafting, being near water, fam sandwiches (a big family hug), and a good old fashioned movie night with popcorn.

Fun Fact:
As a baby, I snored (and still do) louder than my dad.
