What Is Anxiety? Understanding Normal vs. Clinical Anxiety | Anxiety Therapy San Diego

October 14, 2025

Anxiety is often misunderstood. As a therapist in San Diego, I frequently hear clients say, “I think I just worry too much.” But anxiety is more than stress—it’s a real, physical, and emotional experience that can interfere with daily life. In this post, we’ll explore what anxiety actually is—and what it isn’t.

Anxiety is a natural response to stress or perceived danger. It’s part of our body’s survival system, alerting us to threats and helping us stay safe. But when this response becomes chronic, overwhelming, or out of proportion to the situation, it can significantly impact your quality of life. This is the difference between everyday anxiety and an anxiety disorder.

Many people live with persistent anxiety without realizing it.

ou might notice symptoms like excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, trouble sleeping, or avoiding certain situations. These aren’t just personality traits—they’re often signs that your nervous system is on high alert. It’s as if your body is saying “look bear!” over and over again. Your mind and body are perceiving a significant threat that may not even exist. It becomes exhausting to live in that hyperalert state, for both your mind and your body!

Unfortunately, anxiety is often minimized or misunderstood. Some common myths include:

“Anxiety is just in your head.” In reality, anxiety affects your whole body.

“If I were stronger, I’d be able to control it.” Strength has nothing to do with it—anxiety is not a character flaw. In fact it takes strength and courage to admit you are dealing with anxiety and to take the steps to heal.

“It’ll go away if I ignore it.” Ignoring anxiety usually gives it more power. There’s a big difference between ignoring and pushing away anxiety versus welcoming anxiety to be there while not paying it any mind.

Understanding what anxiety is (and isn’t)

Understanding what anxiety is (and isn’t) helps reduce shame and self-judgment. It also opens the door to healing, whether through therapy, group work, or self-guided strategies. I know that you have likely already tried everything in your power to “get rid of” your anxiety. This isn’t something that will just relent the more you try. You have to understand where the anxiety is coming from, its purpose and its impact before you will start to see symptoms diminish. This often takes the work of therapy to process and make sense of these emotions.
