Why Group Treatment Helps with Anxiety
Anxiety often convinces us we’re alone. That no one else thinks this way or feels this way. But healing happens in community. Group therapy and in-person workshops offer something uniquely powerful: connection.
In a world where we are growing further apart as a society, it’s no wonder the amount of anxiety has sky rocketed. We NEED connection, it’s in our hardwiring, it’s a part of who we are as humans. To deny that need for belonging and connecting is denying a huge part of who we are, and is likely contributing to our anxiety. As a San Diego therapist, I’ve seen the transformation that happens when people gather in a safe space to share their experiences and learn together. Group settings reduce shame, increase belonging, and provide real-time support.
Here’s what makes group treatment so effective:
- Universality: Realizing others struggle like you do is deeply relieving. Knowing you are not alone, it’s not something “wrong” with you.
- Modeling & Feedback: Watching others practice tools and hearing supportive reflections builds confidence. Hearing what has helped others from their own voice is very powerful.
- Accountability & Practice: Regular sessions create momentum and growth. Supporting one another, holding each other accountable, these are all pivotal pieces of a journey towards healing.
- Community Support: You’re not alone in the journey. We are here on earth together. We are part of a bigger community. Healing just one person can create a ripple effect of healing in our community by the lives they touch in the process.
Now is the time for “doing.” It’s great to read, educate yourself and learn, but if you don’t go out and “do” you are not fully benefiting from the time spent learning. Build momentum by starting small habits consistently each day towards your healing. No huge leaps, just small consistent steps. That is what will get you towards your goals.
This wraps up our 7-part series. We hope you found value in the education and tools offered. Healing has to start somewhere and it starts with you!
