EMDR Therapy

Helping You Move Through What Feels Stuck

At Freedom Within Center, we truly believe that healing is possible, even from the experiences that feel the hardest to move past. Many of our therapists are trained in what is called EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a powerful, research-supported approach that helps the brain process and release distressing memories, emotions, and beliefs. Basically a fancy way of saying there is proof this approach helps move people past trauma into feeling better, more free and alive!

As a group practice offering EMDR therapy in San Diego, we’ve seen firsthand how transformative this work can be. Clients often share that they feel lighter, more at peace, and finally able to move forward in ways they hadn’t thought were possible.

Why EMDR?

EMDR therapy, started by Dr. Francine Shapiro, is widely known for its effectiveness in treating trauma. It has become a gold standard treatment for PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder), stuck memories and trauma in general.

It’s so common for people to come to therapy feeling “stuck”. They may be engaged in habits or patterns that no longer serve them, memories that create distress, or emotional responses that don’t seem to shift, no matter how much they understand them. EMDR works differently. Instead of only talking through experiences, it helps your brain actually reprocess them.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps your brain process unresolved experiences so they no longer feel overwhelming.

During sessions, your therapist will guide you through recalling certain memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds). This helps your brain “unstick” the memory and reprocess it in a way that feels more adaptive and less distressing.

You don’t have to relive everything in detail. The process is paced carefully, with your safety and comfort at the center. We teach you tools to help support you in the process and spend time getting to really understand you and your goals and concerns prior to starting EMDR therapy.

What Can EMDR Help With?

While EMDR therapy is best known for trauma, it can also support:

  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Depression
  • Childhood wounds
  • Relationship patterns
  • Negative self-beliefs
  • Feeling stuck or unable to move forward
  • Grief and loss

If something feels unresolved or keeps resurfacing, EMDR can help your system process and release it.

What Can You Expect?

EMDR is not about pushing you faster than you’re ready for. At Freedom Within Center, we begin by building a strong foundation helping you feel grounded, supported, and resourced before moving into deeper processing work.

Sessions are collaborative and tailored to your pace. Many clients notice:

  • Reduced emotional intensity around past experiences
  • Greater clarity and self-understanding
  • A shift in long held beliefs about themselves
  • Feeling more present and connected in daily life

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting, it means the memory no longer holds the same weight. Imagine being able to share about the memory without having all the emotions connected to it. It becomes more like a story you have read before, it’s familiar, but it’s not scary and it’s not impacting your life in the same way.

Real Change is Possible

We’ve seen incredible outcomes with clients who have engaged in EMDR therapy.

People often come in feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or weighed down by their past. They leave feeling more empowered, hopeful, and like themselves again. It’s an opportunity to reconnect to your true self.

It is so incredibly rewarding for us to see the transformation that takes place for our clients. They frequently share that they feel lighter, less triggered, and better able to move forward in their lives after this work. Imagine a world where you are not held hostage to your memories, your past and the traumas that may have occurred. It’s a very freeing place to be.
