TriWest/VA CCN Insurance
TriWest/VA CCN Insurance & Therapy Services
We Accept TriWest / VA CCN Insurance here at Freedom Within Center
Freedom Within Center is honored to serve veterans and military-connected individuals through the TriWest / VA Community Care Network (CCN). We provide trauma-informed, evidence-based therapy for veterans and their families. We provide counseling to Veterans in person in San Diego and virtually throughout CA.
Before starting therapy, veterans must have an authorization from the VA to receive community-based care.
What Your TriWest/VA Plan May Cover
- Individual Therapy (PTSD, trauma, adjustment, etc.)
- Family and Couples Counseling
- In-person and Telehealth Sessions
Clients typically have no out-of-pocket costs for authorized services.
How to Get Authorized for Counseling with VA Community Care
- Contact your VA Provider or Care Coordinator.
- Request a referral for mental health services. If they cannot see you in timely manner within the VA they will offer you the option to seek care in the community.
- When they offer you community care, request to be seen by Freedom Within Therapy and Wellness Center for outpatient therapy under the Community Care Program. Provide our Group NPI: 1548700891
- Wait for your authorization paperwork — once received, we can begin sessions right away.
We cannot bill TriWest/VA without active authorization.
Are my counseling sessions covered in full by the VA?
Therapy under VA authorization is typically fully covered. There are no copays or coinsurance for approved services.
However, the VA does not cover late cancel or missed appointment fees. If clients cancel late or miss two or more sessions, we pause care until attendance stabilizes. You are always welcome to return once your schedule allows for consistent attendance.
How is my information shared with the VA?
The VA will require a diagnosis to reimburse for services as they need to deem treatment “medically necessary” in order to pay for the support. This means we will share the diagnosis with them when we bill for services. You are always welcome to obtain that diagnosis from your therapist by asking. Additionally, the VA will request copies of progress notes throughout your treatment.
Can I keep my information private?
Absolutely. If you’d prefer to have your information kept more private you might consider paying privately for sessions instead of using your VA benefits. This gives you more control over how your records are shared and documented..

FAQs
Do I need authorization to start therapy?
Yes, the VA must issue an authorization before we can begin. Your sessions are only covered during that authorization period. Please write down the dates and remember to make a plan for when your authorization ends.
What if I miss my appointment?
The VA does not cover missed sessions, and after two late cancels or no-shows, we pause treatment to ensure commitment.
What services are covered by the VA CCN?
Individual, couples, and family therapy are typically covered.
What happens when my authorization for counseling ends? Can I get more sessions from the VA?
You can request additional sessions from the VA, which they may or may not approve depending on your symptoms and progress in treatment, but your therapist can help you with that process.
If the VA will not approve additional counseling sessions how can I continue treatment?
When your authorization ends you can either continue sessions with your therapist and pay out of pocket. Or if you have other health insurance benefits you can share those with us and we can see what your potential cost shares will be.
