What Is Medication Management?
Medication management is the process of evaluating, prescribing, and monitoring mental health medications to help relieve symptoms and improve functioning.
Our Nurse Practitioner will take the time to understand your history, goals, and preferences before recommending a personalized treatment plan.
During your care, your provider will:
- Complete a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation
- Review your medical and mental health history
- Discuss treatment options, including non-medication alternatives
- Prescribe and monitor psychiatric medications when appropriate
- Collaborate with your therapist or care team for integrated, whole-person care
Who Can Prescribe Medication?
At Freedom Within Center, psychiatric medications are prescribed and managed by a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) — a licensed and board-certified medical provider who specializes in mental health care.
A PMHNP is trained to:
- Conduct full psychiatric evaluations
- Diagnose mental health conditions
- Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications
- Monitor side effects, effectiveness, and overall wellness
- Collaborate closely with your therapist or primary care physician
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners hold advanced nursing degrees (Master’s or Doctorate level) and receive specialized training in psychopharmacology, mental health assessment, and integrated treatment.
In some cases, other licensed medical professionals may also prescribe psychiatric medication, such as:
- Psychiatrists (MD or DO) – Physicians specializing in mental health who can provide medication and psychotherapy
- Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) – Can prescribe medications for more general mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD but may refer complex cases to specialists. They also are not specialists in mental health so we often encourage folks to seek out prescribe with mental health specialization such as NPs and Psychiatrists.
- Physician Assistants (PAs) – May prescribe under physician supervision depending on the setting and scope of practice
At Freedom Within Center, your Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will focus solely on your mental health needs, ensuring medication is used safely, effectively, and in alignment with your therapy goals.
Who Can Benefit from Medication Management?
Medication management may help if you are struggling with:
- Depression or persistent sadness
- Anxiety, panic, or excessive worry
- PTSD or trauma-related symptoms
- Hormone imbalance including menopause and perimenopause
- Perinatal mental health and postpartum
- Bipolar disorder or mood instability
- ADHD or concentration difficulties
- Sleep disturbances
- Chronic stress or emotional exhaustion
For many clients, a combination of therapy and medication provides faster relief and more sustainable results.

If medication is appropriate, your provider will review all options, potential side effects, and expected outcomes so you can make an informed decision. - Follow-Up Appointments
Regular check-ins to monitor progress, adjust dosages, and support your ongoing mental wellness. Depending on the session these can be anywhere from 20-60 minutes in length.
